Suns Lose Early Lead, Fall 8-3 Tuesday Night

Hagerstown, MD -  Seth Romero struck-out eight batters in five innings of work as the Hagerstown Suns lost 8-3 to the West Virginia Power Tuesday night at Historic Municipal Stadium. The Suns are now 3-9 in the Second Half and are 30-50 overall. Hagerstown will start a three-game series against the Delmarva Shorebirds starting on Wednesday with a 6:05 PM first pitch.

The Suns scored first in the opening inning against Power starter Travis MacGregor. With two outs, Luis Garcia reached third base on an errant throw to first by MacGregor, and Jake Scudder singled to right field to score Garcia and take the lead 1-0. Omar Meregildo singled to center field and was caught in a rundown between first and second; Scudder scored to make it 2-0 and Meregildo was tagged out to end the inning.
The Power scored in the third inning against Suns starter Seth Romero. Kyle Watson led off with a walk, moved to second on a ground out to third, and moved to third on a ground-out to second base. Fabricio Macias singled to left field plating Watson to make it a 2-1 Hagerstown lead.
The Suns answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the third. Yasel Antuna led off with a single and advanced to second with a stolen base. Garcia singled up the middle to put runners on the corners with one out and Scudder singled to center field to plate Antuna increasing the lead 3-1.
West Virginia scored two runs in the sixth inning against Jared Johnson. Macias reached first on an errant throw, Cal Mitchell singled to put runners on first and second with no outs, and, with one out, Ben Bengtson singled to right to plate Macias and make it a 3-2 Hagerstown lead. Chris Sharpe singled to load the bases and Watson worked his third walk of the game, scoring Bengtson to tie the game 3-3.
The Power added five runs in the seventh inning against Suns reliever Carlos Pena. Cruz led off with an infield single, Macias walked to put runners on first and second with no outs, and Mitchell belted his eighth home run of the year to right field to take a 6-3 lead. Deon Stafford singled, Sharpe singled to right with one out to put runners on first and second, and Stafford moved to third on a fielder's choice by Raul Siri to put runners at the corners with two outs. Watson singled to center field plating Stafford and extending the West Virginia lead to 7-3. Lolo Sanchez singled to right field and Siri scored to make it 8-3. The Suns were shut out in the final six innings of the game, falling by a final score of 8-3.
Romero spun five innings allowing one run on one hit, three walks, and striking out a season-high eight batters in a no decision. Johnson pitched one inning giving up two unearned runs on three hits and a walk in a blown save. Pena (0-1) threw two innings and allowed five runs on six hits, four walks, one strikeout and gave up a home run in a loss. Jared Brasher pitched the ninth inning and recorded a walk and a strikeout.
Notes: Romero tied his career-high in innings pitched with five… He recorded his season-high in strikeouts with eight… Romero allowed one hit in Tuesday's start, tying a team-low for hits allowed in a 5+ inning start… The mark was set by Matthew DeRosier… Scudder logged his eighth multi-hit and multi-RBI game on the season… Scudder also extended his hit-streak to four games… He tied his season-high in hits with three which is the third time he accomplished it this season… Garcia increased his hitting streak to four games… Antuna increased his hitting streak to four games… Esthay logged his seventh multi-hit game of the season… Hagerstown will travel to Delmarva for a three-game series starting on Wednesday night… First pitch will be at 6:05 PM… The Suns will send RHP Brigham Hill (0-1, 2.19 ERA) to the mound against a Shorebirds pitcher to be determined…
