Suns Split Doubleheader on Sunday

Hagerstown, MD - Sam Held threw four scoreless innings in his first professional start and Gage Canning went three-for-six on the day as the Hagerstown Suns split the twin-bill against the Lakewood BlueClaws, winning game one 1-0 and falling in game two 3-0. The Suns are 10-19 in the second half and 37-60 overall and will start a four-game series with the Delmarva Shorebirds on Monday night with a 7:05 PM first pitch.
In game one after five and a half scoreless innings, the Suns scored a run against BlueClaws starter Andrew Brown. Phil Caulfield was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and advanced to second base on a wild pitch. With two outs, Gage Canning singled to left-center field plating Caulfield to give Hagerstown a 1-0 lead.
Brigham Hill (2-3) spun six scoreless innings while allowing four hits and striking out five in a win Sunday afternoon, earning his first quality start of the season. Phil Morse entered out of the bullpen to pitch the seventh, striking out the side in order to preserve the 1-0 shutout.
After being held hitless in the first four innings of game two, Lakewood scored three runs against Hagerstown reliever Jared Johnson. With one out, Colby Fitch was hit by a pitch, Dalton Guthrie singled to left field, and Quincy Nieporte walked to load the bases. Josh Stephen doubled to right field, plating Fitch and Guthrie to take the 2-0 lead. Jose Antequera hit a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Nieporte to make it 3-0.
Sam Held spun four innings of hitless ball, striking out three hitters in a no decision. Johnson (0-2) pitched an inning while allowing three runs on two hits and walked a batter in his second loss of the season. Jared Brasher entered out of the bullpen to pitch the last two innings and did not allow a hit, walked one, and struck out one in loss.
Notes: Hill earned his first quality start of the season… His six innings set a season-high and ties a career-high… Hill's quality start is the 28th for the Suns this season… Caulfield logged his first hit in a Hagerstown uniform in his first at-bat with the Suns… Morse recorded his first save of the season… The last time the Suns won a game 1-0 was on July 5 at Delmarva in a 10-inning game… The last time Hagerstown shutout a team was July 12 in a 6-0 win against Columbia… Panaccione made his second start at second base… Nick Choruby recorded his first outfield assist of the season… Held made his first professional start… His four innings of work tied a career-high and set a season-high…The Suns logged their first win at home on Sunday… Hagerstown is now 1-4-5 in double headers this season… The Suns are 3-4 when they equal their opponent's hit total… Hagerstown was shutout after shutting out an opponent for the third time this year… Last time was July 11 and 12 against Columbia at home… Canning logged his fourth multi-hit game of the season… Hagerstown will start a four-game series on Monday night against the Delmarva Shorebirds… First pitch will be at 7:05 PM… The Suns will send RHP Tomas Alastre (3-5, 3.56 ERA) to the mound against a Shorebirds pitcher to be determined… The broadcast can be heard, starting with the pregame show at 6:50 PM on www.hagerstownsuns.com by going to multimedia tab and clicking on "Listen Live"...
