The Biloxi Shuckers (74-54, 33-25) earned their first series win of the season over the Pensacola Blue Wahoos (63-62, 33-24) with a 2-1 victory on Tuesday morning at MGM Park. The Shuckers are now just a half game back of Pensacola for first place with two games left in the series.
The Shuckers did not waste a pitch in breaking out to their lead. On the first offering from RHP Tony Santillan (L, 4-2) in the bottom of the first, Corey Ray boomed his league-leading 26th home run of the year out to right field. The ninth leadoff tater of the season for Ray put the Shuckers up 1-0. In the bottom of the second, Trent Grisham led off in a similar fashion, blasting a solo shot out to left field to extend the lead to 2-0, his seventh of the season.
With a lead in hand, RHP Trey Supak (W, 4-6) was superb over six quality innings. The righty surrendered just three hits while striking out six Blue Wahoos. Santillan settled in after allowing the two home runs, lasting seven frames, but leaving with the 2-0 deficit.
RHP Jeff Ames (H, 2) tossed a scoreless seventh, but allowed his first run of the season for the Shuckers when Gavin LaValley led off the eighth with a solo homer to left. Cassidy Brown followed the home run with a double, and a walk to Narciso Crook forced Mike Guerrero to make a pitching change. LHP Brad Kuntz (H, 4) entered to face one batter. The lefty struck out the left-handed hitting TJ Friedl and gave way to RHP Josh Uhen (H, 2) for the final two outs of the inning. With the tying run at second, Uhen induced a lineout to right field off the bat of Jose Siri and got Malik Collymore to ground out softly to second base.
RHP Nate Griep (S, 32) came on in the ninth and worked around a leadoff walk to secure his Minor League Baseball-leading 32nd save of the season.
The Shuckers can grab sole possession of first place with a win over the Blue Wahoos on Wednesday night at 6:35 PM CT. Biloxi's starter is TBA, while Pensacola will toss RHP Daniel Wright (6-9, 4.19) on an All-You-Can-Eat Wednesday at MGM Park.
