Syracuse Mets Recap: Mets Rally from Five-Run Deficit to Beat Clippers, 10-6

Syracuse, N.Y. – After falling behind by five runs in the second inning, the Syracuse Mets stormed back to defeat the Columbus Clippers, 10-6, on Thursday night at NBT Bank Stadium.

Columbus jumped in front in the second inning when Kahlil Watson launched a two-run homer before Cooper Ingle capped the five-run frame with a three-run home run, giving the Clippers a 5-0 lead.

The Mets got on the board in the bottom of the second when Andy Ibáñez grounded out to score Christopher Morel, then chipped away in the third on a two-run homer by MJ Melendez, trimming the deficit to 5-3.

Columbus added a solo homer by Ralphy Velazquez in the fourth to make it 6-3, but Nick Lorusso answered with a solo blast in the bottom half to pull Syracuse back within two.

The comeback continued in the fifth. Vidal Bruján and Melendez opened the inning with singles before Ronny Mauricio lifted a sacrifice fly to score Bruján. Two batters later, Ibáñez lined an RBI double to center, tying the game at 6-6.

After the bullpen held Columbus scoreless over the next three innings, Syracuse broke through in the eighth. Pinch-runner D'Andre Smith scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch before bases-loaded walks to Melendez and Mauricio forced home two more runs. Christopher Morel then added a sacrifice fly to cap a four-run inning and extend the lead to 10-6.

On the mound, Jack Wenninger earned the win after allowing six runs on five hits over five innings, walking three and striking out six. Joe Jacques followed with two scoreless innings, allowing one walk while striking out two. Matt Turner tossed a scoreless eighth, permitting one hit and one walk while striking out two. Matt Seelinger closed out the ninth with a scoreless inning, walking one and striking out two.

Syracuse (15-20, 53-57) continues its series with Columbus (18-18, 59-51) on Friday night at NBT Bank Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
