Syracuse, NY – A five-run fourth inning gave the Syracuse Mets all the offense they needed as they held off a late Worcester rally for a 6-5 win over the Red Sox on Saturday night at NBT Bank Stadium.
Syracuse (6-5, 44-42) broke through in the bottom of the fourth inning. MJ Melendez drew a walk and Christian Arroyo followed with a single before Ryan Clifford lined an RBI single to left field, giving the Mets a 1-0 lead. Jihwan Bae then walked to load the bases, and Hayden Senger delivered an RBI single to make it 2-0. Two batters later, Vidal Bruján cleared the bases with a three-run triple to right field, extending the Syracuse advantage to 5-0.
The Mets added an insurance run in the seventh when Melendez launched a solo home run to right field, his sixth homer of the season, pushing the lead to 6-0.
Worcester (4-7, 40-42) mounted a comeback in the eighth. Braiden Ward singled before Vinny Capra and Mickey Gasper were both hit by pitches to load the bases. Mikey Romero followed with a two-run single, and Brett Harris reached on a force out that, coupled with a throwing error, allowed two more runs to score, trimming the Syracuse lead to 6-4.
The Red Sox threatened again in the ninth. Max Ferguson walked and Ward singled before Mickey Gasper lined an RBI single to right field, making it a one-run game. Joe Jacques entered with two runners on and two outs, retiring Mikey Romero on a groundout to secure the victory.
On the mound, Jack Wenninger turned in one of his strongest starts of the season, tossing seven scoreless innings while allowing just one hit and striking out five. Ofreidy Gómez ran into trouble in the eighth, allowing four runs before Ben Simon recorded the final out of the inning. Jacques earned the save by recording the final out in the ninth.
Bruján's three-run triple highlighted the decisive fourth inning, while Senger and Clifford each drove in a run. Melendez finished with a solo homer and scored twice, and Arroyo added two hits as Syracuse posted back-to-back wins.
