Thompson’s Career-High 9 K’s Not Enough in Shuckers Loss to Blue Wahoos

PENSACOLA, FL – The Biloxi Shuckers (64-68, 29-38) were doubled by the Pensacola Blue Wahoos (79-56, 43-23) 8-4 on Friday evening at Blue Wahoos Stadium. Shuckers starter J.D. Thompson (4.2ip, 9k) fanned a career-high nine batters over nearly five innings of work.
Both squads stuck for a run in the first after an Eric Bitonti RBI groundout and a Max Williams solo home run. Dylan O’Rae helped the Shuckers retake the lead in the second on an opposite field RBI base knock. The Blue Wahoos went onto score three unanswered runs in the next two innings on a Cristian Hernández run-scoring double and Williams sacrifice fly in the third, plus a Payton Green RBI single in the fourth to make it 4-1. Damon Keith deadlocked the contest at four each in the fifth with a 409 foot, 114 mph moonshot. Hernández hit a homer of his own a frame later in the sixth to punch Pensacola back in front. Colby Shade also clubbed a solo shot in the seventh and Aiva Arquette added on in the eighth with an RBI base hit.
Damon Keith spearheaded the offense for the Biloxi with a multi-hit and multi-RBI outing. Dylan O’Rae also picked up a pair of hits and stole his 60th base of the season. That marks the first Brewers Double-A player to swipe 60 bags in a season since Mike Felder (71) did it with the El Paso Diablos in 1983.
Jaydenn Estanista ended with the win, while Stiven Cruz (4-3) collected the loss and Jack Sellinger secured his ninth save.
The Shuckers have two more chances against the Blue Wahoos before the two teams matchup in the Southern League Division Series. The penultimate game of the regular season takes place on Saturday with Josh Knoth (0-0, 4.50) on the bump for Biloxi and Emmett Olson (Double-A Debut) on the other side for Pensacola. The Shuckers and Blue Wahoos battle for the second-to-last time before the postseason with first pitch slated for 6:05 p.m. Coverage begins at 5:45 p.m. with the On-Deck Show on the Biloxi Shuckers Radio Network and The Hype 100.9.
