Throwing Error Proves Costly in 4-3 Loss to Cannon Ballers

KANNAPOLIS, NC - A getaway seventh inning proved costly for the Fayetteville Woodpeckers (16-26) on Wednesday night, surrendering a late lead and dropping the second game of the series to the Kannapolis Cannon Ballers (12-31) 4-3 at Atrium Health Ballpark.

Both starting pitchers work efficiently throughout their outings. Misael Tamarez allowed the first run of the night on a sacrifice fly from Luis Miesis in the first, but recovered to complete four innings while striking out six. Chase Solesky didn’t allow a hit his first time through the Fayetteville order, but ran into trouble in the third after allowing Yohander Martinez and Shay Whitomb to reach. In a two-strike count, Jordan Brewer drilled a two-run triple to right center field, putting Fayetteville in front 2-1.

The lead held until the bottom of the seventh, when Alfredi Jimenez (L, 0-3) allowed three straight singles, including a Samil Polonco base hit that tied the game 2-2. With runners on first and second, Daniel Milwee tapped a ball back to the mound and the throw from Jimenez sailed into the right field bullpen. Both runners scored to push Kannapolis ahead 4-2.

A field error on the Kannapolis side made it a one-run game in the eighth. McKinley Moore (S, 4) inherited the bases loaded out of the bullpen and got Yohander Martinez to ground to second. Bryan Ramos couldn’t field cleanly and allowed a run to score to make it 4-3.

In the ninth, Moore worked a clean inning retiring the side in order to close the game.

The series continues on Thursday with first pitch at 7:00 p.m. ET. RHP Peyton Plumlee is scheduled to start for Fayetteville and Kannapolis will throw RHP Jesus Valles.
