The Thunder, presented by NJM Insurance, rode a pair of homers and strong pitching to a 5-2 win over the Binghamton Rumble Ponies on Thursday night at ARM & HAMMER Park.
The win snapped a season-high four-game losing streak for the Thunder (22-14), who reclaimed first place in the Eastern Division over Binghamton (21-14).
Zack Zehner gave the Thunder a prompt 3-0 lead with a three-run homer off Mike Gibbons (3-5) in the first inning.
Binghamton quickly responded in the second inning, as Patrick Mazeika led off with a home run off Thunder starter Garrett Whitlock, and Kevin Kaczmarski later provided an RBI-groundout to bring the Rumble Ponies within one run.
But Matt Lipka brought home a run for the Thunder on a fielder's choice grounder in the third inning, and Chris Gittens added a solo homer-his team-leading eighth-to right field in the fifth, chasing Gibbons from the game and extending the Thunder lead to 5-2.
Will Carter (1-0) provided three and one-third innings of scoreless relief, allowing just one hit, and Daniel Alvarez pitched the final two frames, allowing a two-run homer to Arismendy Alcantara in the ninth before retiring the next two batters to seal the victory.
The Thunder are now 13-2 at home this season, the best home record in the Eastern League.
Your Thunder continue their homestand on Friday night at 7 p.m. against the Rumble Ponies. The Thunder have yet to announce their starting pitcher, while RHP Chris Mazza (0-1, 2.45) will go for Binghamton. The first 1,000 fans ages 14 and over will receive a Thunder Pork Roll Flash Hat, presented by Case's Pork Roll. Tickets are available by phone at 609-394-3300 or online at TrentonThunder.com.
