Alford leaves Fisher Cats' game in pain

A promising season for Anthony Alford hit a snag on Saturday.
The Blue Jays' No. 3 prospect left the first game of Double-A New Hampshire's doubleheader after suffering an apparent ankle injury while fielding a ball in the outfield.

The injury occured on a seventh-inning single by David Thompson. The  Mets' No. 23 prospect lined a ball to left field, forcing Alford to move to his right. However, the 22-year-old's legs gave out and he slipped awkwardly on the wet grass. He hobbled after the ball in obvious pain as both Thompson and Kevin Taylor -- who had been on first -- came around to score.

Alford was able to walk off the field and was replaced by Harold Ramirez. He did not play in the nightcap, a 9-0 Fisher Cats loss, as Ramirez again manned left field.
The 2012 third-round pick and MLB.com's No. 63 overall prospect is off to a hot start in his first Double-A season. Through 24 games, he has a .308/.382/.440 slash line with two doubles, six doubles, 10 RBIs and seven stolen bases. Although he had cooled recently, the Ole Miss product sported an average above .400 as recently as April 26.
There was no immediate information following the game on the severity of Alford's injury.
Alford was limited to 92 games last year due to a knee injury and concussion. Since he missed most of his first three seasons playing football at Mississippi, he's appeared in more than 100 games just once -- in 2015.
"My main goal is just to try and stay healthy and develop and try to get as many reps as I can," Alford told MiLB.com in April.
