RANCHO CUCAMONGA, Calif. — The Ontario Tower Buzzers took control late and rolled to a 5-1 win over the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes on Wednesday night in Rancho Cucamonga.

It all started with pitching. Luis Gamez fired four scoreless innings out of the bullpen, and the rest of Ontario’s staff held the Quakes to just one run on six hits with 14 strikeouts. Rancho Cucamonga had runners on base most of the game but went just 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position and left 11 men stranded.

The Tower Buzzers got on the board in the fourth after Ching-Hsien Ko got hit by a pitch and Javier Herrera singled. Bryan Gonzalez Garcia brought Ko home with an RBI single, then Abel Lorenzo drove in Herrera with another hit to make it 2-0.

Rancho Cucamonga answered right away. Jeffery Heard doubled, and Marlon Quintero drove him in with another double to trim Ontario’s lead to 2-1.

Things got dicey for Ontario, but Angel Cruz came in with the tying run in scoring position and didn’t flinch. After a balk and a walk, the Quakes had runners on second and third with no outs. Cruz struck out two straight and Gonzalez Garcia tagged out Quintero trying to steal home, stopping the rally.

That turned out to be a huge moment.

Carias finished with one run allowed in three-plus innings, and Cruz worked a clean frame before Gamez took over. Gamez faced the minimum in the eighth, striking out the side and keeping the narrow lead intact.

Ontario threatened to add on in the eighth but finally broke through in the ninth. Abel Lorenzo led off with a single, stole second, and advanced on a bad throw. Caleb Johnson walked, then Kellon Lindsey doubled home Lorenzo for a 3-1 lead. Johnson scored on a wild pitch, and Joendry Vargas grounded out to bring Lindsey home, stretching the lead to four.

Lorenzo paced the offense, going 3-for-4 with a double, RBI, run, and steal. Lindsey chipped in two hits, a double, a walk, an RBI, and a run. Ko added two knocks and reached base three times.

Jecsua Liborius slammed the door in the ninth, striking out two and working around a pair of walks to secure the win.

Gamez picked up his first win, combining with Cruz and Liborius for six scoreless innings and 10 punchouts from the bullpen.

Ontario played a clean game defensively and threw out two Quakes baserunners, more than making up for Rancho’s steady traffic on the bases.

The Buzzers’ 5-1 win made it back-to-back strong pitching performances in this series and kept them on top against a Southern Division rival.
