SAN JOSE, Calif. — The Ontario Tower Buzzers just don’t know when to quit.
On Friday night in San Jose, they watched a five-run lead vanish, lost the advantage more than once, and still found a way to beat the Giants 9-8 in 10 wild innings at Excite Ballpark. That’s four wins in a row now against San Jose, and Ontario’s record jumps to 52-42.
It wasn’t perfect baseball, not by a long shot. Three errors, a blown lead, and plenty of tense moments. But the Buzzers never let up. Even when San Jose clawed back, Ontario kept coming. The game finally ended with a sharp double play that slammed the door in the bottom of the 10th.
Easton Shelton got things rolling early. He crushed his league-best 31st home run to lead off the second and put Ontario up 1-0.
The Buzzers kept adding on in the third. Javier Herrera doubled, Mairoshendrick Martinus knocked in a run with a sacrifice fly, and a balk (thanks to a wild pickoff attempt from Giants starter Keyner Martinez) made it 3-0 without another extra-base hit.
But San Jose punched back hard.
Tower Buzzers starter Mason Estrada lost the zone with three walks, then Rod Barajas Jr. made him pay with a two-out grand slam to right-center. Ontario’s 3-0 lead flipped to a 5-3 Giants advantage just like that.
The Buzzers didn’t hang their heads. In the sixth, Martinus homered, Ching-Hsien Ko singled, Shelton drew a walk, and Joendry Vargas drove in a run. A Giants throwing error let another run score, and Ontario was back on top 6-5.
But, you guessed it, the Giants struck again. Another messy inning for Ontario, another two runs for San Jose, with one coming home on a wild pitch and the other after a costly throwing error. Suddenly it was a 7-6 Giants lead.
This time, Ontario’s bullpen steadied the ship. Accimias Morales dodged a couple jams over two scoreless innings, and Jose Vasquez kept it tied through nine.
The ninth inning? Pure scrap. Brendan Tunink nearly struck out but dashed to first on a dropped third strike from a crucial throwing error by Barajas Jr. He swiped second, moved over on another Giants misfire, then sprinted home on a wild pitch. No hits needed, just gutsy baseball. Game tied, headed to extras.
In the 10th, the Buzzers jumped on more San Jose mistakes. A wild pitch put Martinus on third, then Vargas drove him in with a grounder. Oswaldo Osorio tacked on another run with a clutch single, and suddenly Ontario had breathing room.
San Jose still made it interesting, plating one in the bottom of the 10th and bringing the tying run to the plate. But the night ended with a crisp 6-4-3 double play that sent the Buzzers pouring onto the field.
Nine runs on nine hits, five Giants errors. Martinus homered, drove in two, and scored twice. Shelton kept flexing his power with home run No. 31. Osorio finished with two hits, including the game-winner in extras. Herrera and Vargas each drove in runs too.
The series keeps rolling Saturday night back in San Jose. You can bet the Buzzers will be ready to go again.
