VISALIA, Calif. – The Ontario Tower Buzzers just keep rolling. Friday night, they put together another all-around win, with Hyun-Seok Jang taking charge on the mound and the lineup keeping the pressure on, coasting to a 9-1 rout over the Visalia Rawhide at Valley Strong Ballpark.
Now at 38-35 and riding a three-game win streak, the Buzzers hold a 3-1 lead in this six-game set.
Jang owned the spotlight. This outing might’ve been his best all year. The righty breezed through five shutout innings, only giving up three hits, striking out ten, and walking just one. Earlier this season, he could flash electric stuff but rarely put it all together. Friday, he looked every bit like the Dodgers prospect everyone hoped he’d be when he came over from South Korea.
He wasted no time going after hitters, pounding the zone early, and piling up whiffs with his entire arsenal. The fastball set the tone, and his breaking stuff just kept Visalia guessing. They never found any rhythm against him.
The bullpen carried the momentum. Peter Bonilla handled a clean sixth, then things got a little dicey in the seventh when Jose Cabrera loaded the bases with just one out. Enter Will Gagnon, who went to college 20 miles from Visalia, and who put out the fire instantly. Two batters, two big strikeouts. Gagnon didn’t stop there; he finished the rest of the game, punching out six across 2.2 hitless innings in his homecoming game.
The offense was sharp top to bottom. Mairo Martinus led the charge with four hits, including two doubles, capping off an already impressive series, hitting .588 in 17 at-bats, collecting 10 hits. Joendry Vargas chipped in two hits and a pair of RBIs, while Oswaldo Osorio cranked his third homer of the year in the fourth to stretch the lead.
Even with nine runs on the board, Ontario left some runs out there, just 2-for-18 with runners in scoring position. Still, they made Visalia’s defense sweat all night. The Rawhide committed two errors, and Ontario tacked on runs with smart baserunning, a sac fly, and a few productive outs.
Rawhide starter Chung-Hsiang Huang didn’t last long, pulled after two innings and three runs allowed. Visalia burned through four more pitchers, but the Buzzers scored in six separate innings and never let up.
Visalia finally scratched out a run in the seventh, their only mark of the night, but Gagnon slammed the door on any hopes of a rally.
The Buzzers look as complete as they have all season. The rotation found its groove, the bullpen’s getting clutch outs, and the offense one through nine.
They survived a tight one in extras Thursday and breezed to victory Friday. With two games left in the series and momentum on their side, Ontario’s got another road series win within reach.
