North Little Rock, AR-The Arkansas Travelers and Tulsa Drillers split a doubleheader on Thursday night at Dickey-Stephens Park with the Travs winning game one 3-1 and then the Drillers taking the nightcap by the same score.
Game one was a dominant performance from Travs starter Lindsey Caughel. Tossing the first complete game in the league this season, Caughel (2-2) went all seven innings on 94 pitches while surrendering only two hits and walk with four strikeouts for the victory. Tulsa's lone run came on a fourth inning homer by Paul Hoenecke.
The Travelers immediately responded to that homer scoring twice in the bottom of the fourth including an RBI single from Chantz Mack on his birthday. The Travs would tack on a run in the fifth on Kyle Waldrop's RBI single. Drillers starter Ivan Vieitez dropped to 1-2 with the loss.
In the second game Tulsa rode a pair of homers from Edwin Ríos, his fifth and sixth of the season to the 3-1 win. Rios blasted a two-run shot in the first and solo poke in the fifth. Arkansas mustered their lone tally in the third inning on a Chuck Taylor RBI double. Taylor had two doubles in the contest as the Travs had multiple runners and opportunities to do damage but stranded 10 men.
Karch Kowalczyk (1-0) pitched two scoreless from the Tulsa bullpen to pick up the victory while Yaisel Sierra recorded the last six outs for his second save. Travs starter Andrew Moore struck out six but lasted only four innings and dropped to 1-2 on the season with the loss.
The Travs and Drillers wrap up their four game series on Friday night with a 7:10 first pitch at Dickey-Stephens Park. Right-hander Max Povse (3-1, 3.81) gets the start for Arkansas while righty Josh Sborz (0-1, 8.53) goes for Tulsa. The first 1000 fans through the gates will receive a 2017 Travelers team photo. The game will also be broadcast on the Sports Animal 920, the First Pitch App, TuneIn radio and milb.tv.
