North Little Rock, AR-The Arkansas Travelers won a wild affair on Mother's Day over the Springfield Cardinals, 8-7 on a walk-off single from Ian Miller.
The Travs won it in the ninth after seeing Springfield rally from a three run deficit. The Travelers built their lead after the Cardinals opened the game with a two run first inning. Arkansas answered with four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, all scoring with two outs. Tyler Marlette plated the first with a bases loaded walk then Marcus Littlewood put the Travs up with a two-run double before Joey Wong followed with an RBI single knocking Springfield starter Austin Gomber out of the game.
Wong would add to the lead in the third inning when he launched his first homer of the season. After the Cards came back with two in the fourth, the Travs again answered. This time it was Ryan Casteel with an RBI hit and Kyle Waldrop beating out a potential double play to score another and push the lead back to three again.
Springfield chipped away against the Trav bullpen getting a single tally in the sixth and then tying it with two in the eighth. Their eighth inning rally consisted of four walks and then Adolis Garcia racing home for a stolen base on a throw from the catcher back to the pitcher. Blake Perry would get out of it with no more damage. In the ninth, Springfield threatened as well on a pair of walks but Ryan Horstman shut it down with a pair of strikeouts.
Miller's heroics were set up as the Travs loaded the bases with no outs. Marlette walked to open the inning and moved up on Littlewood's sac bunt when the Cards went for the lead runner but failed. Wong then came up with a hit to fill the bases and one batter later Miller lined the first pitch he saw from Chandler Hawkins into right field.
Horstman (2-0) garnered the win while Hawkins (0-1) was charged with the loss. Chuck Taylor had a second inning single to stretch his hitting streak to 16 while reaching base for the 26th consecutive game.
In addition to the game-winning RBI, Miller was 3-6 overall in the game. Wong had a perfect day at the plate though. Using a pink bat on Mother's Day, Joey was 4-4 with a walk, the homerun and two knocked in.
