PASCO – The big scoring for the Tri-City Dust Devils (23-27 2H, 58-58) came in the middle innings Wednesday night, with a three-run 6th inning earning the home nine a 4-3 win over the Everett AquaSox (25-25 2H, 58-58) at Gesa Stadium to take a two-games-to-none series lead.
Tri-City trailed 3-1 coming to the bottom of the 6th inning, first getting on the board when they received a two-out RBI single in the 3rd inning from CF Hayden Alvarez. The 19-year-old got the three-run rally started with a leadoff single to left off Everett starter Taylor Dollard (5-9). 3B Harold Coll followed by muscling a broken bat liner to center for a single and 1B Ryan Nicholson walked to load the bases with no one out.
All three runners would score in the frame, with Alvarez scoring on a bases loaded walk drawn by DH Jonny McGill to make it a 3-2 game. Dollard departed and lefty Caleb Franzen took over, asked to get out fellow lefties C Peter Burns and LF Kevyn Castillo and keep his team in front. Burns and Castillo would both get the best of him, with Burns lining a game-tying RBI single to right that scored Coll and Castillo hitting a fly ball deep enough for a sac fly bringing Nicholson in to give the Dust Devils the only lead they would need.
Starter Dylan Jordan went five innings and kept his team in the game, giving up three runs on five hits and striking out six. AquaSox LF Carlos Jimenez provided the majority of the offense for the visitors, hitting two solo home runs off Jordan out of the leadoff spot. The bullpen handled it the rest of the way, as lefty Francis Texido (3-6) and righty Kyle Roche (third save) each threw two scoreless and no-hit innings to clinch the win.
DUST DEVILS NOTES
-Peter Burns reached base all four times in the game, going 3-for-3 with a walk. The left-hand hitter has performed well at the plate since taking over the starting catching duties on June 23, hitting .274 (31-for-113) with a home run and 10 RBI.
-The win moved Tri-City to 5-14 on Wednesdays. While that mark remains the worst record for the Dust Devils on any given day of the week, the team stands at 4-5 in their last nine Wednesday contests.
-Tri-City also moved a game closer in the Northwest League’s Second Half playoff chase with the victory, as the Eugene Emeralds down the Vancouver Canadians 6-4 at PK Park to even their series at a game apiece. The Dust Devils now sit five games out of a playoff spot with 16 games remaining in the regular season. Also, the Hillsboro Hops beat the Spokane Indians 5-2 at Avista Stadium to even their series.
