The Pensacola Blue Wahoos (57-50, 27-12) captured a victory in both games against the Biloxi Shuckers (63-46, 22-17) on Wednesday night at Blue Wahoos Stadium.
GAME ONE (Suspended Game)
Picking up a suspended game from Tuesday night in the top of the second, the Shuckers had an early scoring threat. Trent Grisham worked a walk, putting him on base with Richie Shaffer before Max McDowell also worked a walk against RHP Robinson Leyer. RHP Thomas Jankins (L, 9-7) stepped into the batter's box with one out and bounced into a 6-4-3 double play, ending the frame and the Biloxi threat.
Pensacola went in front in the bottom of the third inning. Jose Siri started the frame with a single and motored in to score on a triple by TJ Friedl, putting the Blue Wahoos up 1-0. Jankins locked down Pensacola after that, retiring the next 17 batters in a row.
It took just one swing of the bat for the Shuckers to tie the game in the sixth. Richie Shaffer tattooed a fastball over the left field wall, his second with Biloxi, to knot the contest at one all.
The Shuckers generated a run without the aid of a hit in the top of the ninth. Luis Aviles Jr. Jr. drew a leadoff walk and stole second in the ensuing at bat. Trent Grisham flied to deep left field for the first out and Aviles aggressively tagged up to third on the out. With McDowell at the plate, RHP Jose Rafael De Paula (W, 3-3) uncorked a wild pitch, allowing Aviles to race in from third to put Biloxi in front 2-1.
Trying to finish off the game, Jankins allowed a leadoff single to Friedl to start the bottom of the ninth. Attempting to pick Friedl off first, Jankins committed a throwing error, letting him advance to third. Taylor Featherston then hit a sacrifice fly to left, scoring the tying run. In the next at bat, Aristides Aquino connected on a 3-1 pitch from Jankins for a walk-off home run, giving Pensacola a 3-2 win.
GAME TWO
RHP Cody Ponce (L, 6-5) started the game for the Shuckers in the seven-inning affair. The Blue Wahoos got to the Shuckers starter in the second, scoring a run on a double from Mitch Nay.
On the other side, RHP Carlos Navas limited Biloxi to just one hit in his three innings of work. RHP Nick Howard (W, 1-0) allowed a single in his inning of work but prevented the runner from scoring thanks to a fly out.
Ponce departed in the fourth with a pair of runners on base and one out. Howard drove in a pair of runners with a single up the middle off RHP Jeff Ames, adding to the Pensacola lead to make it 3-0. The Blue Wahoos put the game out of reach with a four-run bottom of the fourth.
The Shuckers now return to MGM Park to start a five-game series against the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp starting Thursday night at 6:35 PM. Biloxi is slated to send RHP Marcos Diplan (1-1, 3.34) while the Jumbo Shrimp have not named a starter.
