Wappingers Falls, NY- The Black Bears lose the first series of their six-game road trip at Hudson Valley. Unable to continue its fire from game two, West Virginia drops game three despite some amazing outings from the Black Bear's bullpen.
Game one on Friday started off slow for both teams. The first to break the silence was SS Cory Wood with a solo homerun in the top of the third.
The Renegades answered back quickly with a triple and two sac flies, taking the score to 3-1 Hudson Valley in the home half. The Renegades went on to score another two runs and sealed their win for game one of the series.
The Black Bears found their series-tying victory with a comeback in Saturday's game. Hudson Valley came in and scored a combined four runs in the second and third innings. Facing a 4-0 deficit, West Virginia fought uphill and batted three singles. 2B Cory Wood drove in DH Kyle Wilkie and clawed back into the ballgame, taking the score to 4-1.
The fifth was quiet for both teams, but in the sixth the Black Bears came in bats blazing. A triple from CF Matt Fraizer started things off, and 1B Will Matthiessen drove him home on a fielder's choice.
Wood, LF Brett Kinneman , and C Elys Escobar batted three consecutive hits - a single, a double and a single respectively - with the go-ahead run being a line drive off the bat of Escobar, bringing in both Wood and Kinneman, putting the score at 5-4 West Virginia.
The Renegades were forced into a pitching change, but the Black Bears held their lead and closed the game with a final score of 5-4.
One of the Black Bear's newest arrivals, RHP Bear Bellomy , had his first start in game three and showed his stuff. Pitching five innings, Bellomy faced only 17 batters and gave up just two hits until he was relieved in the sixth by LHP Trey McGough .
From the batter's box, West Virginia was stuck until the fifth inning when C Ryan Haug doubled on a line drive to right, driving in Kinneman to give a mid-game 1-0 lead to the Black Bears. West Virginia scored again in the sixth, this time off the bat of Kinneman, taking Matthiessen to home.
The 2-0 lead wouldn't last long. The Renegades answered quickly with two runs in the bottom, knotting things up at 2-2. They went on to score three more runs in the seventh, taking it to 5-3.
The Black Bears attempted to rally in the eighth behind a run from 2B Dean Lockery off a field error but were stopped short and the game closed after the top of the ninth with a final score of 5-3, with Hudson Valley taking the series.
West Virginia continues its road trip with a three-game series against the Mahoning Valley Scrappers. First pitch for tonight's matchup is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
