Biloxi Shuckers infielder Weston Wilson has been named the Southern League Player of the Month for April, the Southern League announced on Wednesday. The honor comes just two days after Wilson was named the Southern League Player of the Week.
During the month, Wilson led the Southern League in total bases (52), runs scored (20), slugging percentage (.591) and OPS (.971). He also ranked second in home runs (6), tied for second in RBI (18) and extra-base hits (13) and tied for fifth in hits (26). His 20 runs scored were the most runs scored by any player in Double-A and he ranked third in Double-A in total bases.
Wilson's month included his third career four-hit game on April 20, were he went 4-for-5 with a double, two home runs, two RBI and four runs scored. He hit safely in nine straight games from April 19 to April 27, going 15-for-33 (.455) with three doubles, a triple, five home runs, 13 RBI and 11 runs scored. The Shuckers infielder also homered in three straight games from April 22 to 24, becoming just the fourth player in Shuckers' history to homer in three or more consecutive games. In his last game of the month, Wilson went 2-for-4 with a home run, four RBI, a walk, two runs scored and a stolen base as part of a 14-5 Shuckers victory.
Taken in the 17th round of the 2016 First Year Player Draft out of Clemson, this is the second Player of the Month honor in Wilson's career. The corner infielder was named the Carolina League Player of the Month in July of 2018 and also collected the Brewers Player of the Month honor for July. Earlier this week, Wilson was named the Southern League Player of the Week for April 22 to 27 after slashing .308/.419/.769 with a double, a triple, three home runs and nine RBI.
The High Point, NC native becomes the third Shuckers player to take home Player of the Month honors. 2018 Southern League MVP Corey Ray earned the award in July of 2018 and Brandon Woodruff was named the Player of the Month in July of 2016.
