COMSTOCK PARK, MI - The West Michigan Whitecaps saw their offensive struggles continue and despite an impressive showing from starter Brad Bass fell once again to the Bowling Green Hot Rods 3-1 in front of 7,127 fans Saturday at Fifth Third Ballpark in ten innings.
Whitecaps fans saw former Notre Dame product Brad Bass prove brilliant in his best start of 2018, limiting a Hot Rods offense which took the first two games of the series in dominating fashion. Bowling Green starter Tommy Romero kept in stride with a marvelous start of his own as he went 6.2 innings, holding the Whitecaps on three hits and no runs.
The only blemish on Bass's night came in the fourth inning as a Moises Gomez solo home run in the fourth inning put the Hot Rods up 1-0. The lead stood until the Whitecaps knotted the game at one in the eighth inning. Brock Deatherage singled, advanced to second on a wild pitch, stole third base and eventually scored off another wild pitch from Hot Rods reliever Orlando Romero. The game went to the tenth inning, and The Hot Rods put the finishing touches on the scoreboard with a 3-1 advantage in the tenth. An RBI-double from Emilio Gustave and a run-scoring single by Vidal Brujan off 'Caps reliever Felix Viloria were the difference in the game as the Whitecaps went down in order and lost for the third straight game in the four-game series.
Viloria (2-2) evened his record on the year with his second loss, working two innings of relief, but Bass went seven innings strong, allowing one run on six hits and striking out seven. Orlando Romero (2-0) picked up the victory, and Tyler Zombro picked up his third save of the season. Brock Deatherage provided some offensive, recording two of just four hits on the night for West Michigan. With the win, the Hot Rods advance to 53-26 on the year, while the Whitecaps drop their 2018 record to 41-39 and 5-5 in the second half standings.
