The Red Wings returned to their winning ways this evening, defeating Syracuse 5-4 in the first game of this road series.

Wings designated hitter Joey Meneses shined, hitting the team’s first grand slam of the year in the third to put the Wings up 4-0. He tallied a run and four RBI in four at bats.

Logan Verrett toed the rubber first for the Wings, tossing eight strikeouts and allowing three hits in six innings of work.

Rochester’s Cole Freeman blasted a center field homer out of the ballpark in the eighth…the second homer of the game for the Wings, giving them a 5-1 lead.

Relief pitcher Sam Clay had his 12-game scoreless inning streak snapped, relinquishing a run after walking Nick Plummer with the bases loaded. He was quickly replaced by RHP Jordan Weems after pitching to only four batters.

The Mets scored two runs in the eighth and homered in the ninth to cut Rochester’s lead to one, but Weems ultimately secured the save, his team-leading fifth of the year.

Rochester will look to keep the momentum going tomorrow at 11:05 a.m. in game two against the Mets.
