CORPUS CHRISTI - Jackson Wolf struck out 11 while pitching seven innings of one-run ball as the Missions upended Corpus Christi, 4-2, Friday night before 7,344 fans at Whataburger Field.
Since winning three in a row, the Hooks have dropped back-to-back games.
Rhett Kouba was charged with an underserved loss as held San Antonio to two runs (one earned) and one walk over six innings pitched. Kouba, who ranks fifth in the Texas League with a 3.93 ERA, owns four of the eight Hooks quality starts in 2023.
Garrett Wolforth helped the Hooks establish a 1-1 tie in the third as he lined a one-out single into left field. Kenedy Corona was next and whipped a double down the left-field line.
The Missions countered with three runs (one earned) over the five innings as they forged a 4-1 edge.
With Wolf, who retired 14 of the final 15 he faced, out of the ballgame, the Hooks cut the deficit in half in the eighth.
Back-to-back knocks by J.C. Correa and Wolforth, as well as a one-out walk from Joey Loperfido, loaded the bases for Zach Daniels who pulled a 1-2 pitch into right field for an RBI single. Wolforth was thrown out trying to score on the play as the rally stalled.
Jose Quezada worked a 1-2-3 ninth to seal the SA win.
