Down East Wins First Two Games of Series

KINSTON, NC: The Delmarva Shorebirds (1-10) suffered their second consecutive, one-run loss against the Down East Wood Ducks (6-5) as they were walked off in ten innings on Wednesday afternoon by a score of 4-3.

The Wood Ducks took the first lead in the second inning as groundout from JoJo Blackmon scored Danyer Cueva from third, giving Down East a 1-0 lead.

In the fourth, the Wood Ducks scored on an RBI single by Cueva to make it 2-0. He would work around the base paths and touch home on a wild pitch to extend the Down East advantage to 3-0.

After being held scoreless through the first game and a half of the series, the Shorebirds broke through for three runs in the fifth, starting with an RBI double by Alfredo Velasquez to plate Angel Tejada, making it a 3-1 game. Cole Urman then scored Doug Hodo on a single to left, field cutting the deficit to 3-2. Delmarva went to the bag of tricks to even the game as they pulled off a successful first and third steal with Cole Urman taking second base, the throw down to the bag allowed Velasquez to stroll in from third, tying the game at three.

Following that frame, it turned into a battle of the bullpens, highlighted by Trey Gibson for the Shorebirds who dominated in his five innings. He retired 15 of the 16 batters he faced while racking up a new career-high for strikeouts with eight. He would help take the game into extras with the game still knotted at three after nine innings.

In the tenth, the Shorebirds put runners at second and third, but the Wood Ducks escaped the jam to keep the game tied. With two outs and two strikes in the bottom of the tenth, Gleider Figuereo pulled a base-hit down the first base line to score the winning run from second, giving Down East a 4-3 victory in ten innings.

Luke Savage (1-0) was the winning pitcher for the Wood Ducks with Dominic Freeberger (0-1) taking the loss.

Delmarva will look to get back in the series on Thursday with RHP Ty Weatherly making his first start against RHP Jose Gonzalez for the Wood Ducks. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
