Woodpeckers Shutout in Sunday Rubber Match with Down East

Fayetteville, NC - The Fayetteville Woodpeckers (35-44, 4-10) got some solid pitching from Alex Santos and Carlos Calderon on a rainy Sunday afternoon, but couldn’t come up with any runs on the offensive end in a 2-0 defeat to the Down East Wood Ducks (41-39, 8-6) at Segra Stadium. With the loss, the Woodpeckers drop the five-game series 3-2.
Santos (L, 0-8) allowed his only run of the day in the top of the first inning on a two-out RBI single by Alejandro Osuna. He recovered with four scoreless innings afterward and tied a season-high with eight strikeouts. Santos turned the ball over to Carlos Calderon in the sixth. Calderon worked four innings of relief, allowing a sacrifice fly to Alejandro Osuna in the sixth inning before closing his day with three consecutive scoreless innings.
Multiple scoring chances for the Woodpeckers fell short. The offense left a total of nine runners on base, six in scoring position. Winston Santos (W, 4-3) pitched six scoreless innings, Kai Wynyard went 1.2 innings from the bullpen, and Jackson Leath (SV, 1) retired the side in order in the bottom of the ninth for his first save of the year.
The Woodpeckers will be off on Monday and begin a new series against the Myrtle Beach Pelicans in Myrtle Beach, SC on Tuesday. First pitch at TicketReturn.com Field in the series opener is scheduled for 7:05 pm EST.
