Williamsport, P.A.- With his offense backing him up, Taiga Yamane worked five solid frames, helping the Cutters earn their 4-1 win over the Mahoning Valley Scrappers in the series opener.

Yamane, who made his first start since joining the Cutters, allowed just one run over five innings, on six hits, a walk and two hit batters. The right-hander from Japan, struck out five and got some great play from his defense, earning his second win in as many appearances.

Williamsport’s offense quickly got to work, as Trey Steffler ripped a two-run single down the right field line, scoring Isaac Nunez and Jaxon Shirley to give Williamsport a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the 1st. It gave Steffler his 21st and 22nd RBI of the season.

After Mahoning Valley scored in the top of the 2nd inning, the Crosscutters answered in the bottom of the 3rd with two more runs, using production from the middle of the line up again, as Jaxon Shirley singled to center, chasing home Ramon Bramasco, upping the Cutters lead to 3-1.

Steffler plated his 3rd RBI of the night, 23rd of the season, with a sacrifice fly to left field that scored Nunez, giving Williamsport their 4-1 lead.

The Cutters only needed two innings of relief, and Tyler LaPorte started it off right, striking out the side in a perfect 6th inning. Chase Plymell worked around a two-out hit, getting three ground ball outs to close out the win and earn his first save of the season.

The Crosscutters look to take the middle game of the series against the Scrappers, which would give them the current series and season series victories. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. at Muncy Bank Ballpark at Historic Bowman Field.
