Binghamton, NY- The Hartford Yard Goats swept the Binghamton Rumble Ponies in a doubleheader, winning 6-2 and 4-3, and established a new club record for wins (75) on Wednesday night at Mirabito Stadium in New York. Isaac Collins, Grant Lavigne, and Kyle Datres each homered, and Will Ethridge fired five scoreless innings to lead the Yard Goats to a victory in game one. Hunter Goodman hit his first Double-A homer, Julio Carreras had the go-ahead RBI hit in the sixth inning, and Garrett Schilling fired three scoreless for the win in game two. Brenton Doyle hit his 21st home run and Aaron Schunk finished the twin-bill with 2 RBI tying Ryan McMahon's franchise 75 RBI (2016).
Portland defeated Somerset for the second straight game, ending the Yard Goats chances of making the playoffs. Hartford will play the final four games in Binghamton and the season will come to an end.
Isaac Collins got the evening off to a great start when he homered on the very first pitch of the game off Binghamton starter David Griffin. It was the second time he has led off the game with a home run.
The Yard Goats added a pair of runs in the third inning on Grant Lavigne's RBI triple and Aaron Schunk's RBI single to make it 3-0. Brenton Doyle hit a two-run homer in the fifth, a rocket off the batters eye in centerfield, and it was 5-0. Kyle Datres cranked a solo home run in the 6th for a 6-0 Yard Goats lead. Will Ethridge pitched five scoreless innings to earn his first Double-A win.
In game two, Binghamton had a 3-0 lead in the fourth inning. The Rumble Ponies got a run in the first inning and added two on Zach Ashford's two-run single in the second inning. The Yard Goats made it a 3-1 game on Hunter Goodman's solo home run in the fourth inning, his 35th homer in the minor leagues this season.
The Yard Goats scored three runs in the sixth inning to take a 4-3 lead. Aaron Schunk had an RBI single to make it 3-2 and Daniel Cope's deep sacrifice fly scored Goodman to tie the game at 3-3. Julio Carreras followed with an RBI single, scoring Schunk and giving Hartford a 4-3 lead. Garrett Schilling worked three scoreless in relief for the win and Gavin Hollowell hurled a scoreless ninth for his 16th save.
The Yard Goats and Rumble Ponies will play the third of a six-game series on Thursday night at 6:35 in New York. The broadcast can be heard on AM 1410, FM 100.9 and on the iheart radio app.
