SOUTH BEND, IN – After yet another extremely productive week, 20-year-old South Bend Cubs outfielder Yohendrick Pinango has been named the Midwest League Player of the Week for his performance on the road against Peoria. In the first five-and-a-half weeks of the season Alexander Canario and Matt Mervis each took home this honor for South Bend, and last month D.J. Herz took home MWL Pitcher of the Week for the first week of June.

Pinango carried a 12-game hitting streak (his second longest of the season) into Saturday's game and now in the last two series combined the Venezuelan outfielder has amassed 10 multi-hit games in his last 12 starts. Over that span he's batting .453 with a 1.152 on-base plus slugging, seven extra-base hits, 10 runs, 14 RBIs and a mere four strikeouts.

The powerful left-handed batter got the scoring started in the series finale with an RBI-single in the third inning and then scored a crucial insurance run on an Owen Caissie single in the eighth to give the Cubs a 3-1 lead over the Chiefs in their series-clinching victory. He also connected on his team-leading 12th homer of the season in the first inning on Friday night at Dozer Park.

Pinango's power and presence in the three-spot in the Cubs lineup, and his play especially the last couple weeks, has been critical to South Bend going into the All-Star Break in first place. South Bend currently holds a three-game lead on Wisconsin and Cedar Rapids in the second half standings of the MWL.

South Bend is back in action for a nine-game homestand at Four Winds Field that starts this Friday. The Cubs will play the River Bandits for three games over the weekend and then take on Lake County in a six-game series next week. After this upcoming homestand only 36 games (12 home games) remain in the 2022 season, so this stretch will be key as the Cubs try to increase their grip on the West Division.

First pitch on Friday night at Four Winds Field is set for 7:05 ET as South Bend hosts Quad Cities. Tickets are available at SouthBendCubs.com or by calling 574-235-9988.
