JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. - The Appalachian League announced Monday that Johnson City Cardinals RHP Zach Prendergast has been named the circuit's Pitcher of the Week for the time period between August 21-27. This is the 22-year-old's first award of his professional career.
In his lone start during the week - on Thursday night vs. Greeneville - Prendergast was masterful, tossing seven shutout innings, allowing just four hits. The right-hander went on to strike out a career-high 12 without walking a batter in a no-decision. Johnson City went on to win the game on a walk-off home run by SS Imeldo Diaz in the bottom of the ninth, 4-3.
During the week, Prendergast was tied for the league's lowest ERA (0.00), as well as the third-best WHIP (0.57) and fifth-most strikeouts (12). The Horsham, Pa. native also posted the seventh-best batting average against among pitchers (.167) in the start.
Guillory is the third different Cardinal player to receive a weekly honor this year. 1B Luis Bandes earned the circuit's Player of the Week honors twice this season (July 10-16 and July 31-August 6), while RHP Evan Guillory was the league's Pitcher of the Week honor for the time period of August 7-13. This is the first time Johnson City has had two separate pitchers win Pitcher of the Week honors in the season since RHP Josh Wirsu (June 22-29) and RHP Jhonatan Escudero (August 17-24) did it back in 2015.
In five starts with the Redbirds this season, Prendergast has mustered a 3-0 record with a 2.77 ERA (8 ER in 26.0 IP). The Seton Hall product has walked just five batters and struck out 35 in that time (12.12 SO/9). Since his first start with Johnson City on July 29 at Danville, Prendergast is second in the Appy League in strikeouts (35), tied for second in wins (3), sixth in WHIP (1.08), tied for seventh in batting average against (.237) and ninth in ERA (2.77). The right-hander had his contract purchased by the St. Louis Cardinals from the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks of the American Association on July 25.
