Brooks Pounders Named Triple-A All-Star
Omaha Storm Chasers right-hander Brooks Pounders has been selected to represent the organization at the 2016 Triple-A All-Star Game, as announced by the Pacific Coast League on Thursday. The contest will take place in Charlotte, North Carolina on July 13 at BB&T Ballpark and will be televised live nationally on MLB Network.
Pounders enters play Thursday ranked first among all Pacific Coast League hurlers in batting average against (.219), in addition to third in earned-run average (2.84) and fifth in strikeouts (76). Overall in 18 outings with Omaha, including seven starts, this season, the California native has compiled a 4-1 record and 2..84 ERA (20 ER/63.1 IP), adding 28 walks to his 76 strikeouts. His 10.80 strikeouts per nine innings ratio paces all Triple-A hurlers.
The right-hander at one point this year did not allow a run over 12.2 consecutive innings from June 5-23. Over his last seven appearances since June 5, he has recorded a 1-0 mark and 1.00 ERA (2 ER/18.0 IP), adding 9 walks and 32 strikeouts, while opponents have managed just a .159 batting average (10-63).
He was acquired by the Royals in a trade from the Pittsburgh Pirates on December 8, 2011 in exchange for infielder Yamaico Navarro. Pounders was originally selected by the Pirates in the second round of the 2009 MLB Draft out of Temecula Valley High School in California.
It is the first Triple-A All-Star nod for Pounders, in addition to his first All-Star honor at any level in his professional career. Three players represented the Storm Chasers in the 2015 First National Bank Triple-A All-Star Game at Werner Park last season in pitchers Louis Coleman and John Lamb, in addition to infielder Cheslor Cuthbert. Omaha manager Brian Poldberg also served as skipper of the 2015 Pacific Coast League All-Star squad in that contest.
Kansas City Royals RHP Kris Medlen (0-0, 0.00) is expected to make his second Major League Rehab appearance for the Storm Chasers this evening as they begin a four-game homestand versus the Memphis Redbirds. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Memphis is anticipated to counter with RHP Mike Mayers (2-2, 2.65).
Tickets for that contest and all remaining Storm Chasers home dates are still available and can be purchased online at www.omahastormchasers.com/tickets or by calling the Werner Park Ticket Office at (402) 738-5100.
