Canham To Manage Clinton LumberKings
The Seattle Mariners have announced their minor league coaching staff assignments, which included the news that 2013 Storm Chasers catcher Mitch Canham will begin his coaching career as manager of the club's Low-A affiliate, the Clinton LumberKings. Canham not only played in Omaha with the Storm Chasers, but also won back-to-back College World Series titles in Johnny Rosenblatt Stadium during his collegiate career at Oregon State University.
An eight-year minor league veteran, Canham played in six games for the Storm Chasers during the 2013 campaign, posting a .333 average (5-15) with one double and three RBI. His best game in an Omaha uniform came on July 21, 2013, when Canham recorded a two-hit game and reached base three times in an 8-6 victory over the Albuquerque Isotopes. The backstop spent the majority of that season with Double-A Northwest Arkansas, tallying a .261 clip (76-291) along with 41 runs, 21 doubles, four triples, two homers and 26 RBI, and was honored as a Texas League Mid-Season All-Star.
Canham also played his final professional season in the state of Nebraska with the independent American Association's Lincoln Saltdogs in 2015. In 74 contests, the Washington native recorded a .282 mark (81-287), adding 37 runs, eight doubles, two triples, five homers and 32 RBI.
In 542 total affiliated minor league games, Canham combined for a .253 average (473-1872) with 243 runs scored, 90 doubles, 19 triples, 23 homers and 238 RBI, as well as a .339 on-base percentage. Over four seasons at the Triple-A level, all in the Pacific Coast League, the 31-year-old hit .230 (26-113) along with eight runs, one double, one triple and four RBI in 41 games.
He was the 57th overall draft selection by the San Diego Padres out of Oregon State University in the 2007 MLB Draft after winning back-to-back College World Series Championships at Johnny Rosenblatt Stadium in Omaha in 2006 and 2007.
