Former Mayor Honored for Efforts in Building Stadium, Bringing Triple-A Baseball to Omaha
OMAHA, NE - As the Omaha Royals gear up for their 42nd and final season at Johnny Rosenblatt Stadium, the team is proud to make the first announcement of one of many promotions to honor the historic ballpark. The Royals host the Salt Lake Bees on Saturday, May 22 at 7:05 p.m. and the first 1,500 fans will receive a bobblehead in the likeness of former Omaha Mayor Johnny Rosenblatt, courtesy of Coca-Cola.
Omaha Municipal Stadium was renamed Johnny Rosenblatt Stadium in 1964 for the former city council member and mayor who led a group 20 years earlier that laid groundwork for construction of the stadium, which opened in 1948. Rosenblatt also mounted a 1954 campaign for public support to bring Triple-A baseball to the city. That spurred the St. Louis Cardinals to relocate their Triple-A affiliate from Columbus, Ohio to Omaha in 1955, replacing the Cards' Class-A affiliate that had called Omaha home for the previous eight seasons.
Steve Rosenblatt, a former city councilman and the son of the stadium's namesake, has worked with the Royals on various projects and merchandise to celebrate the team's final season at the ballpark, including the Johnny Rosenblatt bobblehead."Johnny would be very proud that the Omaha Royals organization would be nice enough to honor his life with this one-of-a-kind collectible," Rosenblatt said.
"We are privileged to have a great partnership with the Rosenblatt family and are excited to be able to honor Johnny Rosenblatt," said Royals Vice President/General Manager Martie Cordaro. "Coca-Cola is also to be commended for sharing the same vision as our organization in giving fans the opportunity to receive a unique tribute item."
