Chiefs Offense Silenced in 7-0 Loss Friday

Peoples-Walls has three hits in front of more than 5,000 fans

PEORIA, IL- The Peoria Chiefs offense couldn't get anything going in a 7-0 loss to the Burlington Bees on Friday night in front of the second crowd of the season to exceed 5,000. The Chiefs record is 29-25 but they remain in second place, holding a one-game wild card lead.

Burlington struck just three batters into the game against Chiefs starter Alex Reyes. A one-out single was followed by a home run by Michael Fish for a 2-0 Bees lead. It became 3-0 on an unearned run in the second. Ranyelmy Mendoza led off with a single and stole second on a strikeout. He went to third when Carson Kelly's throw went into center field when no one covered the bag and Mendoza scored on a ground out.

The early lead was more than enough for Bees starting pitcher Harrison Cooney. He tossed a complete game shutout without allowing a walk on only six hits and recording eight strikeouts. Cooney lowered his ERA to 2.05 while not allowing a Chiefs baserunner to get past second.

The Bees scored single runs in both the third and fourth innings for a 5-0 lead. Chad Hinshaw walked to open the third and moved to second on a single. A fly out moved him to third and Eric Aguilera hit a ground ball to score the run. In the fourth, Stephen McGee hit a one-out single and got to second on a passed ball. He advanced to third on a pickoff attempt from Kelly when no one covered the bag again and scored on an Erick Salcedo single.

Burlington got insurance in the seventh against Kevin Herget. Fish hit a towering fly ball down the line in left that resulted in a run-scoring triple. Fish scored on an Angel Rosa double for a 7-0 cushion.

Reyes (3-4) went the first 4 2/3 innings allowing five runs (three earned) on five hits with four walks and five strikeouts in taking the loss. Herget tossed the next 2 1/3 innings yielding two runs on three hits with a walk and five strikeouts. Robert Stock made his 2014 Chiefs debut by pitching a scoreless eighth with a hit, a walk and a strikeout. Steve Sabatino hurled a scoreless ninth on one hit.
