Blue Saturday: Claws eke out win over WV

Lakewood edges West Virginia 6-5 in 10 innings

(Lakewood Township, NJ- June 21, 2014)-  The West Virginia Power lost 6-5 to the Lakewood BlueClaws in ten innings on Saturday night. Larry Greene, Jr. singled in Jose Mayorga with two outs in the bottom of the tenth to send the Power to their first loss of the second half.

West Virginia held a 5-0 lead after an inning and half. After Edwin Espinal and Erich Weiss reached on errors, Wyatt Mathisen singled in one run and Adam Landecker doubled in another. Chris Diaz singled in Mathisen before a Justin Maffei sacrifice fly extended the lead to 4-0. Harold Ramirez singled with two down to extend his hitting streak to 13 games and bring in the Power's fifth and final run.

Lakewood rallied for three in the bottom of the second off Power starter Luis Heredia, including a pair on Andrew Knapp's first BlueClaws home run. In the bottom of the eighth, Mitch Walkding doubled in a pair of runs against West Virginia's Clario Perez to even the game at five.

In the bottom of the tenth, Mayorga reached on a single up the middle and moved to second on a throwing error by Landecker. Greene, Jr. singled past the mound an into centerfield to drive in Mayorga and give the Lakewood their first win of the half.

Barrios (2-5) took the loss for the Power after Perez was charged with his third blown save of the season. Will Morris (1-0) worked a three up, three down tenth for the win. All nine West Virginia batters had one hit while five different players each scored a run.

The Power and BlueClaws wrap up this series Sunday afternoon at FirstEnergy Park. Shane Carle and Ranfi Casimiro will start for West Virginia and Lakewood, respectively.
