Today's Game: The Quad Cities River Bandits (affiliate of the Houston Astros) welcome the Kane County Cougars (affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks) to Modern Woodmen Park to open a four-game series. This will be the first of five series between the clubs in 2018. River Bandits-Cougars Season Series in 2017: Overall: River Bandits 9, Cougars 8. Modern Woodmen Park: River Bandits 6, Cougars 3.
Last Time Out: The River Bandits fell to the Cedar Rapids Kernels in the ten innings on Alex Kirilloff's walk-off sacrifice fly off of Peter Solomon. The Kernels grabbed the first lead in the very first inning on Shane Carrier's RBI single and an error by J.J. Matijevic to go up 2-0. The River Bandits tied the score with two runs of their own in the third. Jake Meyers reached on a walk and ended up scoring on a wild pitch, while Corey Julks scored later in the frame on an error by third baseman Andrew Bechtold. Cedar Rapids jumped back ahead in the seventh on an error by Julks that allowed Jordan Gore to score from first on a double off the bat of Royce Lewis. The Bandits forced extras when Gabriel Bracamonte scored from second on another error by Gore who lost the ball on Jonathan Arauz's infield hit. After the Bandits failed to score in the top of the tenth despite starting with Matijevic on second base, the Kernels used an infield hit and then the sacrifice fly from Kirilloff to escape with the victory.
Wacky Weather: The River Bandits have had two of their first four scheduled games this season postponed because of cold weather and forecasted snow. Friday night's game at home was postponed because of temperatures that were in the low 20s at the scheduled start time and then Sunday afternoon's road contest at Cedar Rapids was postponed due to the expectation of accumulating snow. As a result, the River Bandits and Kernels are the only two teams who were able to play just two games over the weekend.
Out of the Ordinary: This is just the second time in the last nine seasons that the River Bandits have lost their first two games of a season. The last time it occurred was in 2016 and, just like this season, came at the hands of the Cedar Rapids Kernels. Cedar Rapids swept a four-game set to open that season and the Bandits dropped their first five games before collecting their first win.
