Rancho Cucamonga, CA - A fantastic start by righty Lindsey Caughel and three fourth-inning runs were more than enough for the Quakes to take down Lake Elsinore 3-0 on Wednesday. The Quakes improved to 18-2 in the Second Half with the win and they have won 19 of their last 21 games overall.
Lindsey Caughel (6-3, 3.05) dazzled in seven shutout innings for Rancho Cucamonga (18-2, 50-40). He struck out nine and did not allow a walk to earn his fourth straight win. In 26 innings since the All-Star Break, Caughel has allowed just one earned run.
First pitch was at 10:35 am on Summer Camp Day at LoanMart Field, and Rancho's offense took a few innings to wake up. Lake Elsinore's Joe Ross (8-5, 3.82) cruised through the first three frames on just 30 pitches.
The fourth was a different story. Aaron Miller, who made his first start in the field with the Quakes, led off with a home run to left-center field off of Ross. Later in the frame, the Quakes loaded the bases for James Baldwin. With two outs, Baldwin laced a two-run double to right-center field that gave the Quakes a 3-0 edge. Baldwin has four runs batted in over the first two games of this series.
After seven innings of shutout baseball from Caughel, Rancho turned to 17-year-old Julio Urias. After walking Jeremy Rodriguez to begin the eighth, Urias struck out the next three batters he faced. It was the last appearance for Urias before the MLB All-Star Futures Game on Sunday in Minneapolis.
In the ninth, the Quakes gave the ball to Dan Couloumbe. The southpaw continued to be effective late in games, allowing just a two-out walk to Jeremy Baltz. He earned his fifth save of the season to give the Quakes a 3-0 win.
It was the fourth shutout for Rancho, and just the third time that Lake Elsinore (12-8, 52-38) had been held off the scoreboard in 2014. Rancho earned a series victory win the win, and the Quakes have not dropped a series since losing three of four to the JetHawks from May 30 to June 2.
The Quakes go for a sweep of the Storm on Thursday night at LoanMart Field. Fabio Martinez (4-4, 4.89) gets the ball for the Quakes against righty Bryan Rodriguez (3-5, 4.30) for the Storm. First pitch is back at our normal time of 7:05 pm and the game will be broadcast live on Fox Sports AM 1350 starting with the LoanMart Pregame Report at 6:50 pm.
