Quakes Above .500 with Win Over 66ers

Rancho improves to 8-1 in Second Half after another one-run win
June 28, 2014

San Bernardino, CA - For the first time this year, the Quakes have a wining record thanks to a 2-1 victory over Inland Empire on Friday night. Rancho got five scoreless innings of relief from its bullpen en route to a second straight one-run win.

For the second game in a row, Rancho Cucamonga (8-1, 40-39) came back from an early deficit. In the second inning, starter Julio Urias gave up a two-run home run to Zach Wright that put the 66ers up 2-0. It was only the third home run the 17-year-old southpaw has surrendered this year.

Rancho got a run back in the third inning when Rob Garvey scored on a wild pitch, and the Quakes ultimately took the lead in the fifth. They loaded the bases for their two All-Stars with no one out against Mark Sappington (1-6, 7.56). Corey Seager smacked an RBI single to tie the game, and Chris Jacobs followed with one of his own to put the Quakes ahead 3-2.

The Quakes got a fantastic performance from their bullpen. Inland Empire (1-8, 26-53) went without a hit from Wright's home run in the second inning to the beginning of the ninth. Geoff Brown (3-4, 4.05) earned the win behind four strikeouts in three perfect innings of relief.

In the ninth inning, the 66ers got a pair of singles to put the tying and go-ahead runs on the bases with one out. With Rob Rogers unavailable, Dan Coulombe closed the door by retiring Wade Hinkle and Cal Towey to end the game.

At 40-39, the Quakes have a winning record for the first time in 2014. Rancho was 3-3 on April 8 after a win versus Inland Empire, but the Quakes went 6-15 in their next 21 games. After going 5-16 in one-run games in the First Half, the Quakes are 3-0 in the Second Half.

Rancho goes for two games above .500 on Saturday night in San Bernardino. In the third game of the series, Lindsey Caughel (3-3, 4.40) makes his first start since May 6 against Inland Empire's Elliot Morris (1-2, 4.81). First pitch is at 7:05 pm and the game will be broadcast live on Fox Sports AM 1350 starting with the LoanMart Pregame Report at 6:50 pm.
