Quakes Win in Extras, Can Clinch Playoff Spot on Sunday

August 31, 2013

Rancho Cucamonga, CA - Bobby Coyle doubled home Casio Grider with the game-winning run in the bottom of the tenth inning, sending the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes to a 4-3 come-from-behind win over the Lancaster JetHawks, in front of another sellout crowd at LoanMart Field.

Over 5,400 fans turned out on Saturday evening, as the Quakes snapped their brief two-game skid, and thanks to a Lake Elsinore win over High Desert, moved their wild card lead to a game and a half over the High Desert Mavericks with just two games to play in the regular season.

Casio Grider bunted his way aboard to start a two-out rally in the tenth, his third hit of the game. With two down and a 3-2 count on Coyle, Grider took off for second, while Coyle took Lancaster reliever Michael Dimock (4-1) into the gap in right-center field, sending Grider home to end the game.

The JetHawks built a 3-0 lead against Quakes' starter Matt Shelton, who pitched well in just his second career start. Shelton, who struck out a career-best eight hitters, allowed three runs over a career-high 5 2/3 innings.

Rancho began their rally in the fourth, as they capitalized on a Delino Deshields error to get on the board at 3-1.

Darnell Sweeney brought home the Quakes' second run in the sixth, as his two-out RBI hit brought home Grider to make it a one-run game at 3-2 against Lancaster starter Colton Cain.

Scott Wingo tied the game in the eighth, as his solo-shot off Gera Sanchez eventually forced extra innings, his fourth of the year.

Eric Eadington (5-5) allowed just one hit over two scoreless frames to notch the win in relief.

Matt Kemp, who played in his third straight game as part of a rehab assignment, finished 0-for-3 with two strikeouts and is now 0-for-11 over a three-game stretch. Kemp is scheduled to continue his rehab stint tomorrow at LoanMart Field, as the Quakes could potentially secure a spot in the 2013 post-season.

The Quakes (33-35, 64-74) send Lindsey Caughel (4-7) to the bump on Sunday at 5:05pm, as he takes on Lancaster's Vincent Velasquez (0-2). A Rancho Cucamonga win and just one High Desert loss in the Mavs' double-header on Sunday and the Quakes would wrap up the final South Division Wild Card playoff spot.

Coming up on Sunday, the Quakes will host Fan Appreciation Day, as we'll be giving away flat-screen TVs, Nintendo Wiis and other great prizes throughout the game. Tickets are available for Sunday's action by calling (909) 481-5000 or online at rcquakes.com. We hope to see you very soon at LoanMart Field. Go Quakes!
