Modesto, CA - The Quakes struggled their way through the final game of the Modesto series on Thursday night, dropping their second straight overall with an 11-0 loss to the Nuts at John Thurman Field.
The Nuts took an early lead against Quakes' starter Michael Boyle and never looked back, as the Nuts won two of three in the series.
Boyle allowed one in the first, then four in the second, as Modesto took a commanding 5-0 lead after just two innings.  Boyle (4-5) was removed after three innings in favor of Dean Kremer, who didn't fare much better.
Kremer walked the first two men he'd face to open the fourth. Both those men would score on a two-run double off the bat of Logan Taylor, making it 7-0.
Alex Hermeling worked a 1-2-3 sixth, but got roughed up for four more in the seventh. The inning was highlighted by a Gianfranco Wawoe three-run triple.
The Rancho offense, blanked for just the ninth time this year, mustered only seven hits in the loss, with Jose Brizuela accounting for three of them. Modesto starter Reggie McClain (10-8) earned the win with seven innings of shut-out baseball, allowing just six hits.
Luke Raley, who had reached base in a California League-best 28 straight games, went 0-for-4 to end that streak.
The Quakes (29-18, 65-52) head to San Bernardino on Friday night, opening a three-game series against the Inland Empire 66ers, who enter the series at five games back of the Quakes in the second-half standings. Rancho has not yet named a starter for Friday, while Inland Empire plans to go with Jose Rodriguez in the opener.
The Quakes will return to LoanMart Field on Monday, August 14th, opening a four-game series against the Stockton Ports at 7:05pm. Monday will be Social Media Monday, as fans that follow the Quakes on Social Media could win prizes throughout the game. Tickets are available by calling (909) 481-5000 or online at rcquakes.com.
