Sweeney's Hit Gives Quakes Win in Ten

April 7, 2013

Rancho Cucamonga, CA - Darnell Sweeney's bloop-single to center field gave the Quakes  a walk-off win in the tenth, as they downed the Lake Elsinore Storm on Sunday afternoon by a final score of 2-1 at LoanMart Field.

Rob Garvey got the rally started in the bottom of the tenth, as he doubled down the left-field line with one out, then moved to third on a Scott Wingo ground ball.  With two outs, Sweeney dropped a shallow fly ball into center field off Storm reliever Dennis O'Grady, scoring Garvey to give the Quakes three of four in the series.

Rancho starter Ross Stripling was brilliant in his Cal League debut, allowing just one hit and one walk over five scoreless frames, but had to settle for a no-decision.

The Quakes staked Stripling to an early lead, when Sweeney tripled to lead off the game, then scored on a Noel Cuevas ground ball to make it 1-0 against Storm starter Matt Jackson.

That lead held up until the eighth, when Storm first baseman Lee Orr connected to right field off of Quakes' reliever James Campbell, evening the game at 1-1.

Pedro Baez (1-0) tossed two scoreless innings to earn the win for the Quakes.

The Quakes (3-1) will look to make it three straight on Monday night, when they open a three-game set against Modesto at 7:05pm.  Jarret Martin will make his 2013 debut, as he'll start on the mound for Rancho.  Modesto will counter with Tyler Gagnon.
