Rancho Cucamonga, CA- Visalia starting pitcher Emilio Vargas held Rancho without a hit until the seventh inning on Monday afternoon, as the Quakes were shut out for the third time this season in a 5-0 loss to the Rawhide.
Vargas set the early tone, striking out four consecutive hitters to begin the game and recorded three perfect innings before Gavin Lux walked in the fourth.
The Rawhide opened the scoring on Quakes pitcher Dustin May in the top of the first inning. Jake Lamb, on major league rehab assignment from the Diamondbacks, scored on a wild pitch and Ramon Hernandez crossed on an infield ground ball, making it 2-0.
In the seventh, Vargas had still not allowed a hit, until Rylan Bannon drilled a bouncing ball through the left side of the infield to put the Quakes in the column. Donovan Casey knocked an additional single in the seventh, ending the day of Vargas (3-0) who tossed 6.2 scoreless innings en route to the win.
Logan Landon drew a walk against incoming reliever Wei-Jen Wong to load the bases but the following hitter, Steve Berman, popped out to end the inning.
Visalia added two runs in the fifth on a pair of RBI doubles, and a solo home run from Hernandez capped the scoring for Visalia in the ninth inning.
May (0-2) who allowed three earned runs over 4.1 innings, including the go-ahead score in the first, settled with the loss.
Monday's contest marked the final time the Quakes and Rawhide will face off during the regular season. With the 5-0 loss, the Quakes dropped the season series to Visalia six-games-to-five. The Quakes will now head to Stockton to begin a three-game series with the Ports on Tuesday.
Right-hander Tony Gonsolin (1-1, 3.72 ERA) will take the ball for Rancho in his eighth start of the season. He will be opposed by Matt Milburn (1-2, 5.29 ERA) of Stockton.
The Quakes return home to LoanMart on Friday, May 18th for the start of a three game series hosting the Lake Elsinore Storm. On Friday, complete the Back-to-Back Bobblehead Series with the Cody Bellinger NL Rookie of the Year bobblehead.
