SEVIERVILLE, TENNESSEE - Jason Vosler's 11th home run of the season in the bottom of the first inning was all the Smokies needed in a 4-1 win over the Lookouts on Thirsty Thursday at Smokies Stadium. With the win, Tennessee is just three wins away from clinching the first half title in the North Division of the Southern League. The bad news is, they're also a lone loss away from being eliminated.
Along with Vosler's bomb, Yasiel Balaguert and David Bote both collected RBI singles to tally the Smokies' third and fourth runs of the game. Bote finished 2-for-4 at the plate with an RBI. Charcer Burks was 1-for-3 on the day and responsible for two of the four Tennessee runs.
Duane Underwood Jr. received the start on the mound for the Smokies and turned in a dominating performance. On his way to his sixth win of the season, Underwood pitched 5.1 innings, allowed just one run, gave up two hits and struck out six.
Tennessee's bullpen shutdown the Lookouts on Thursday night, combining to pitch 3.2 scoreless innings. Daury Torrez and Justin Hancock recorded holds while Dillon Maples picked up his first save of the season.
The Smokies are back in action tomorrow night as they square off with the Lookouts in game three of the five-game series. James Pugliese is expected to take the mound for Tennessee, while Randy LaBlanc is expected to receive the ball for the Lookouts. First pitch is set for 7 p.m. with post game fireworks to follow as part of the Summer Fireworks Series presented by Coors Light and Pepsi.
