JUPITER, Fla. (July 11, 2019) - The St. Lucie Mets rallied late and went on to defeat the Jupiter Hammerheads 7-4 in 10 innings on Thursday at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium.
Jeremy Vasquez went 3 for 5 with two doubles and four RBI. His RBI double with two outs in the eighth tied the game 4-4. His three-run double with two outs in the 10th went down as the winning hit.
Marcel Renteria pitched the final three innings without allowing a hit or a run to get this first FSL win.
The Mets won three out of four against Jupiter, including two extra innings games. They have won seven of their last eight.
The Hammerheads jumped out to a 2-0 lead before recording an out in the first inning. Tristan Pompey hit a RBI triple and Marlins rehabber Martín Prado followed with a RBI single against Dedniel Nunez.
In the fourth inning, Demetrius Sims ripped a RBI double to put Jupiter up 4-1. The Hammerheads had two in scoring position with no outs and a chance to break the game open. Nunez was able to bear down and retire the next three without allowing another run.
The Mets started to mount their comeback in the next inning. Hansel Moreno hit a triple and scored on a balk by Braxton Garrett to make it 4-2. Jacob Zanon then hit a long home run, his seventh of the year, to cut the deficit to 4-3.
After Zanon's homer, the next 10 Mets were retired. Carlos Cortes broke the streak with a two-out single in the eighth. That brought up Vasquez, who flew a ball down the left field line that Pompey lost in the lights. The ball dropped fair for a double that plated Cortes to tie the game.
In the top of the 10th, Moreno reached on a bunt single to start the frame. After a sac bunt and pop out, the Hammerheads opted to intentionally walk Cortes with first base open and put a force at every base. The move backfired when Vasquez laced an opposite field doubled through the left side of the infield that went all the way to the warning track. Manny Rodriguez, Moreno and Cortes scored to give the Mets a three-run lead.
Renteria retired the Hammerheads in order in the bottom of the 10th to end the game. The Mets are now 4-1 in extra innings games in the second half.
The Mets (16-8, 48-42) continue their road trip on Friday when they start a three-game series at the Dunedin Blue Jays. First pitch from Jack Russell Memorial Stadium is set for 6:30 p.m.
