Hoosiers Help TinCaps to Win

Lloyd, VanMeter Contribute Big in Shutout
May 13, 2014

FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- A pair of Hoosiers helped lead the TinCaps to a 7-0 win over the Lake County Captains on Tuesday night at Parkview Field. Starting pitcher Kyle Lloyd threw four scoreless innings on the mound, while at the plate, second baseman Josh VanMeter hit a home run.

A two-run double by Dustin Peterson in the bottom of the first inning gave the TinCaps a 2-0 lead before Lake County (11-27) starter Jordan Milbrath (1-3) had recorded an out. Milbrath had a 1.04 ERA entering the night, but the TinCaps changed that quickly. Dane Phillips added an RBI-groundout in the first to make it 3-0. That would be more than enough offense.

The only thing to slow down Fort Wayne (16-21) on Tuesday was the weather. But not even a 1 hour, 17 minute rain delay in the bottom of the fourth could stop the TinCaps' momentum. After the stoppage, with the score 5-0 at this point, a VanMeter two-run homer over the wall in right field served as an early exclamation point. It was the first home run of the Norwell High School alum's career.

Meanwhile, Lloyd, who graduated from Carmel High School and went to the University of Evansville, extended his scoreless innings streak to 9 1/3. He struck out five without a walk. Out of the bullpen, Tony Wieber (2-0) also tossed four scoreless innings. Wilson Santos recorded the final three outs in the ninth. The shutout win is Fort Wayne's third of the season.

The TinCaps go for a three-game sweep of the Captains on Wednesday with first pitch slated for 11:05 a.m. Coby Cowgill starts for Fort Wayne against Lake County's Adam Plutko. The game can be heard on The Fan 1380, TheFanFortWayne.com, and the TuneIn Radio app. It can also be seen on XFINITY Channel 81.
