VISALIA, CA - Marty Herum stayed hot and with a pair of hits, extending his season-long hitting streak to 10 games. But the San Jose Giants took an early lead off of solo home runs by Heath Quinn and Ryan Howard in the second and third innings respectively and never looked back, winning 7-3.
The San Jose (26-34) offense had a solid overall night, totaling 15 hits of off four Rawhide pitchers and smacking five extra-base hits. Vislalia (29-31) never got into an offensive rhythm, totaling just seven hits and coming up empty in two separate bases-loaded chances. Herum put up the only multi-hit game of the night for the Rawhide and didn't hit the ball hard, but drove home a run with a bases-loaded infield single in the fifth inning and poked a grounder through the right side in the seventh for his team-leading 12th multi-hit game of the season.
Jose Almonte (L, 4-5) lost his second straight decision, going 5 innings while allowing four runs on nine hits. He struck out eight, including punching out the side in the fifth inning, however sandwiched in between the strikeouts was a run-scoring triple by Aramis Garcia, which gave the Giants a 4-2 lead at the time. Matt Krook (W, 2-6) didn't allow a hit until the fourth inning and saw his wildness get the better of him, surrendering a run on a wild pitch in the frame. He struck out five hitters, but two reached because the ball scooted to the backstop past catcher Matt Winn. But a combination of Carlos Diaz and David Owen out of the bullpen kept the Rawhide quiet out. Diaz allowed only a hit and a walk over his three innings.
Trevor Simms took over for Almonte in the sixth with the Rawhide trailing 4-3 and didn't finish the inning, giving up three runs on three hits with a walk and two hit batsmen over two-thirds of a frame, facing eight batters. Nick Baker retired Dillon Dobson to end the sixth, and then went on to pitch two more scoreless innings. Cameron Gann loaded the bases in the ninth, but struck out Ronnie Jebavy to end the threat.
Eight San Jose hitters had a hit tonight, and Jebavy (3-5), Howard (2-5), Bryan Reynolds (2-5), Quinn (2-3), and Jonah Arenado (2-5) all put up multi-hit performances for the Giants, who now sit seven games behind first-place Modesto with 10 games remaining in the first half of the season.
The Rawhide will look to bounce back tomorrow evening with LHP Cody Reed (0-2, 5.23, Arizona #19 prospect, MLB.com) making the start for the Rawhide and LHP Grant Watson (0-0, 11.25) starting for the Giants. First pitch will be at 7:00 PM and tickets are available on Rawhidebaseball.com.
