Mark Reynolds Gets off to a Quick Start in AZ

Cal League All-Star begins well in the AFL
October 16, 2006
Many of the game's top prospects are improving their games in the Arizona Fall League. Lisa Winston of MLB.com checks in on Mark Reynolds progress.

NO RESPECT: Diamondbacks utilityman Mark Reynolds batted .318 with 31 home runs and 98 RBIs in just 106 games between Class A Advanced Lancaster and Double-A Tennessee, finished second in the Minors in slugging percentage at .633, and was one of the offensive stars of the Team USA squad that beat Cuba in the Olympic qualifying tournament. But despite being a mid-season Triple Crown contender in the California League where he led the league in both homers and RBIs, he wasn't even named to that circuit's mid-season All-Star team (though they made up for the slight by naming him to their end-of-season squad). In Arizona, trying to win a spot on the Diamondbacks' 40-man roster, Reynolds was hitting .500 and his 1.655 OPS (combined on-base and slugging) led the league in the early going. But when he came to bat in Phoenix on Friday, the scoreboard read Matt Reynolds. His response? A towering two-run homer to left-center field. It was his second home run in as many games. He added four RBIs on the night in his team's 11-8 victory.
