Hoppers homers too much to overcome

Coastal Carolina's RHP Morrison makes professional debut
July 9, 2016

GREENSBORO, N.C. (July 9, 2016) - Greensboro blasted three home runs to power past the Intimidators, 7-4, in a game that started on Friday night and wrapped up Saturday evening at NewBridge Bank Park.

Kyle Barrett hit a 2-run home run for an early 2-0 Greensboro lead just before umpires called for the tarp on Friday night. The game was suspended due to inclement weather, but the Grasshoppers picked up where Barrett left off as Isael Soto and John Silviano each went yard against the Intimidators bullpen to propel Greensboro to victory.

Mike Morrison, the former Coastal Carolina University pitcher who helped the Chanticleers to the 2016 College World Series championship, made his professional debut in the fifth inning. Morrison allowed two unearned runs on one hit - the Soto home run (5) - while striking out one.

Greensboro reliever Ben Meyer (3-4) earned the win by taking the mound for the Hoppers when play resumed and tossing 4.0 scoreless, hitless innings, striking out five and walking one. Max Beatty (1-2) took the loss for Kannapolis (9-7 Second Half, 33-53), allowing the Barrett home run before the game was suspended due to rain with the Grasshoppers up 2-0 with no outs in the third inning. Beatty allowed two runs on three hits with a strikeout in 2.0 innings of work.

The Hoppers built a 7-0 lead thanks to Silviano's 2-run home run (2) during a 3-run sixth inning against reliever Ian Hamilton before the Kannapolis offense awoke.

The Intimidators plated four runs in the eighth inning off Kyle Keller including a 2-run base hit by Seby Zavala and a 2-run double by Cody Daily. C.J. Robinson pitched a scoreless ninth for Greensboro to earn the save (17).

The Intimidators play Game 3 of this 4-game series in Greensboro today at 7:30 p.m. as Kannapolis sends RHP Luis Martinez (3-7, 4.50 ERA) to the mound against the Grasshoppers' RHP Cody Poteet (3-6, 3.20 ERA). The Intimidators return home on Tuesday, July 12, for a 7-game home stand featuring another Cabarrus Brewing Company Craft Beer Sampling Night on Friday, July 15, and post-game fireworks presented by Carolinas HealthCare System on Saturday, July 16.
