Mehring Monday: 2016 MLB Debuts

Five former Timber Rattlers played their first Major League games this season
October 3, 2016

There were five former Wisconsin Timber Rattlers who made their Major League debuts in 2016. They were Orlando Arcia, Jacob Barnes, Mitch Haniger, Damien Magnifico, and Brent Suter.

As is traditional with the first Mehring Monday of the offseason, it is time to take a look at these players, their time with the Timber Rattlers, their first MLB games, and their first season as big leaguers.

Orlando Arcia: The Milwaukee Brewers #1 prospect was a Timber Rattler in 2013. He played 120 games with four homers and 39 RBI as an 18-year-old that season. Arcia made his MLB debut on August 2 as the starting shortstop against the San Diego Padres in a road game. He went 0-for-4 in that game. He would get his first MLB hit on August 5 at Arizona with an RBI single off Braden Shipley. Arcia wrapped his season at .219/.273/.358 with four homers and 17 RBI in 55 games.

Jacob Barnes: Barnes was a member of the 2012 MWL Championship team and was 4-7 with three saves and a 3.84 ERA in 25 games - seven starts. He was the starting pitcher in Game One of the first round playoff series against Burlington and got the call again as the starter in Game One of the Championship Series against Fort Wayne. Barnes made his MLB debut on June 3 as a reliever for the Brewers in a game at Philadelphia against the Phillies. He pitched a scoreless eighth inning with two strikeouts in that game. Barnes would appear in 27 games with Milwaukee this season and go 0-1 with a 2.70 ERA. Barnes earned his first MLB save on October 1 with a scoreless inning at Colorado.

Mitch Haniger: Haniger played a total of 55 games for the Timber Rattlers between 2012 and 2013. He hit a home run in 14 games with the Rattlers in 2012 before his season ended due to injury. In 2013, he hit five homers and drove in 25 runs in 41 games before getting promoted. Haniger was traded to the Arizona Diamondbacks - along with Anthony Banda - in the 2014 trade for Gerardo Parra. The Diamondbacks put Haniger into the lineup for the first time on August 16 for his MLB debut and he went 2-for-4 with a double, a triple and three RBI against the New York Mets. His first MLB hit was a triple off Noah Syndergaard. He wound up at .229/.309/.404 with five homers - including some long drives - and 17 RBI in 34 games with the Diamondbacks this season.

Damien Magnifico: Magnifico was a Midwest League All-Star with the Timber Rattlers in 2013. He was 5-1 and a 3.83 ERA in eleven games - eight starts - with the Rattlers. The Brewers called Magnifico up to the majors on August 16 and he got in as a reliever at Wrigley Field against the Chicago Cubs. He pitched one inning, allowed one run on no hits with a walk, a hit batsman, a wild pitch, and got the final out on a flyball to right. Magnifico appeared in three games for the Brewers this season and allowed two runs on two hits and three walks over three innings.

Brent Suter: Suter spent a total of eight games with the Timber Rattlers between 2012 and 2013. He had two saves in three games as a reliever in the 2012 regular season. Then, he went 1-0 with a save in two playoff games. That 2012 postseason performance included the save with three scoreless innings at Fort Wayne in the clinching game of the Championship Series. In 2013, Suter made three starts for the Rattlers and was 0-1 with a 1.80 ERA before getting promoted. Suter made his MLB debut with the Brewers as the starting pitcher at Seattle on August 19 and allowed four runs on seven hits over 4-1/3 innings to be charged with the loss. He did strike out Robinson Cano for his first MLB K. The Brewers used Suter 14 times - twice as a starter - this season. He went 2-2 and picked up his first MLB win on August 23 at home against the Colorado Rockies, a game that featured him getting out of this bases loaded jam
