Gamache's Walk-Off Single Sends Senators to 4-3 Win

April 19, 2018

The Harrisburg Senators walked-off against the Reading Fightin Phils 4-3 in ten innings in the homestand finale. Dan Gamache's game-winning RBI single in the tenth gave the Senators their second walk-off win in three days.

The Harrisburg Senators walked-off against the Reading Fightin Phils 4-3 in ten innings in the homestand finale. Dan Gamache's game-winning RBI single in the tenth gave the Senators their second walk-off win in three days.

The Senators scored a pair of runs in the first to open the scoring. After Fightins starter Jacob Waguespack recorded the first two outs, he issued a walk to Jacob Wilson. The next batter, Gamache, knocked an RBI double to left center for the first run of the inning. Yadiel Hernandez followed with a run-scoring single to put the Senators ahead 2-0.
Senators starter Jaron Long allowed six baserunners through the first three innings but did not allow a run until the fourth. The first Fightins batters reached on a walk and a single in the frame, and Deivi Grullon grounded into a run-scoring fielder's choice to put Reading on the board.
Neither starter factored into the decision. Long limited Reading to one run on five hits and three walks in four innings in his first start as a Senators this season.
"I thought (Long) was good. He did what we thought he would do, mixing in soft and hard (pitches). He knows how to pitch," manager Matt LeCroy said. "We're just trying to get him length, that's the only reason he went four innings, because he hadn't pitched much at Triple-A"
Waguespack surrendered three runs across his six innings.
The Senators responded in the bottom of the frame. After Zach Collier hit a lead-off triple, the first three-base hit of the season for the club, Jake Lowery reached on a fielder's choice which allowed Collier to cross home to expand the Senators advantage to 3-1.
The team remained ahead until the seventh, when Cord Sandberg hit a game-tying two-run home run to left off Dakota Bacus.
Both team's bullpens shutout the opposition over the next two innings, sending the game into the tenth. The Fightins loaded the bases in the top of the tenth, but Roman Mendez struck out Malquin Canelo to retire the side.
In the bottom of the tenth, against reliever Luke Leftwich, Wilson hit a fly ball to right to advance the Stephen Perez, the free-runner, to third base. The next batter, Gamache, singled into right-center field to send the Senators to the walk-off win.
Gamache finished 2-4, including hitting his Eastern League leading 5th double of the season, with a pair of RBI.
"(Gamache) is a professional hitter. He knows what he's trying to do every time up. He doesn't really waver that," LeCroy said. "He's a good guy to have around with some younger kids and he gives us some depth there in the middle of our lineup."
Mendez (1-0) earned the win with two shutout innings of relief while Leftwich (0-2) took the loss after allowing one unearned run in a third of an inning. The Senators went 3-3 on the homestand after splitting both series against Bowie and Reading.
"It's always good to get on that bus with a 'W', especially the way we got it today. Hopefully we get a good dinner, get on that bus, enjoy the win and we'll be ready to go at it in Hartford."
The Senators embark on a six-game road trip beginning Friday night against the Hartford Yard Goats. Luis Reyes starts the series opener for the Senators against Hartford starter Jesus Tinoco. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. at Dunkin Donut Parks. The game can be heard on CBS Sports Radio 95.3 FM, 96.5 FM and 1400 AM.
