Captains Hold On for 3-2 Win

(Comstock Park, MI)- RHP Dace Kime earned the win after pitching six innings and yielding just one run and as the Captains beat West Michigan 3-2 on Wednesday night. Kime (6-12) allowed just five hits, one walk and he struck out five. With the win, the Captains will set up a rubber game in the series finale on Thursday night. The Captains are now 1-10 on the road in the month of July.

Lake County scored a run in the opening inning. Clint Frazier was at second base with two outs. Eric Haase hit a broken bat single to center field and Frazier scored with ease. The Captains led 1-0 after one inning. The Captains added a run in the third inning on a sacrifice fly by Paul Hendrix. The score was 2-0.

In the bottom of the third inning West Michigan got on the scoreboard. With two outs, Wynton Bernard was on first base. Bernard stole second and scored on a single from Javier Betancourt. The score was 2-1 after three frames.

Lake County scored a run in the top of the fifth inning to extend the lead. With one out, Nellie Rodriguez singled home Clint Frazier and the score was 3-1 Lake County after five innings. West Michigan closed the gap in the bottom of the seventh. With two outs and two runners on Javier Betancourt singled to right field and one run scored to trim the Captains advantage to 3-2 after seven innings.

Jimmy Stokes pitched two innings of relief and allowed one run on three hits and one walk. Stokes fanned three. Justin Brantley pitched a scoreless ninth inning to earn his fist professional save. The Whitecaps left 11 men on base.

RHP Jonathan Crawford (6-3) started game two for the Whitecaps and took the loss. Crawford pitched five innings and allowed three earned runs on six hits, three walks, one hit batter and three wild pitches. Crawford fanned a pair of Captains. The Whitecaps bullpen consisted of two relievers on Wednesday night and held the Captains scoreless over the last four innings. The Captains stranded 11 base runners on the night.

The Captains will conclude a brief three-game road trip. Lake County traveled to Comstock Park, Michigan to take on the West Michigan Whitecaps. On Thursday, Lake County will send LHP Luis Lugo (5-8, 5.95) to the mound and the Whitecaps will counter with RHP Matt Davenport (5-2, 2.58). First Pitch is at 7:00 PM from Fifth Third Ballpark.
