Six- Run 2nd Sparks Loons 7-4 Win
(Midland, MI) - Great Lakes (22-13) scored six runs in the bottom of the second inning and defeated the Captains (16-18) by a final of 7-4. In the second inning, Great Lakes used seven hits, two walks and a wild pitch to score the six runs. The seven hits were all singles, in fact Great Lakes had 12 hits on the night and 11 of them were singles. The rally in the second inning started with two outs. Lake County has now dropped three straight games by the same exact score of 7-4.
Lake County scored first, Todd Hankins doubled to lead off the ballgame and then Dorssys Paulino singled home Hankins and the score was 1-0. In the second inning, Eric Haase walked and moved to second on a single from Zack MacPhee. Haase came into score on a ground out by Nick Hamilton and the score was 2-0 Captains headed to the bottom of the second.
Trailing 6-2, The Captains got a run back in the top of the third inning, Hankins drew a lead off walk and then raced around to score on an RBI double from Dorssys Paulino. The score was 6-3. Lake County made it a 6-4 game in the seventh. A two-out walk from Logan Vick started the rally. Vick then stole second base and Joe Sever doubled Vick home. The lead was cut to two runs.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, Corey Seager hit his ninth homerun of the season, a solo shot, to dead center field. Seager a first round draft pick by the LA Dodgers, extended the lead back to three runs. The score was 7-4 and that was the final.
RHP Dylan Baker (6-6) started the game for Lake County and took the loss. Baker pitched one and two thirds innings and allowed six earned runs on eight hits, with two walks and one wild pitch. DJ Brown entered the game in relief and pitched four and one third innings and allowed two hits and four strikeouts. Kyle Crockett pitched one inning and allowed the homer to Seager. Cody Penny also pitched a scoreless inning in relief.
Great Lakes sent LHP Julio Urias (2-0) to the mound to start the game and did not factor into the final decision. Urias pitched two innings and allowed two earned runs on three hits with one walk and three strikeouts. Geoff Brown (9-1) got the win after a strong effort out of the bullpen. Brown pitched four innings and one earned run on three hits, and three walks. Brown fanned four. Arismendy Ozoria and Owen Jones pitched a combined two innings and allowed one run. Craig Stem picked up his 14th save on the season by pitching a scoreless ninth.
The Captains will be back in action on Sunday Afternoon in Midland, MI to take on the Great Lakes Loons. The Captains will start RHP Robbie Aviles (3-3, 4.26) and Great Lakes will counter with RHP Chris Anderson (2-0, 1.96). First Pitch is at 3:05 PM from Dow Diamond.
