Fayetteville, N.C. - Luke Adams hit a three-run home run in the first, and Chase Costello gets the win with four perfect innings as Mudcats bounce back to tie the series up at two.
Carolina (21-13, 53-43) took a three-run lead in the first inning behind a Luke Adams home run. Fayetteville (15-19, 45-55) responded by tying the game up before the Mudcats took the lead back for good and tied the series up at two apiece.
Luke Adams hit his 10th home run of the season with two on and one out in the top of the first to give Carolina the lead. After the game was tied back up at 3-3 the Mudcats responded with three runs in the seventh behind a double and two fielder's choices giving Carolina another three-run lead. The Mudcats added to the lead in the ninth thanks to a wild pitch and Gregory Barrios bringing in his second RBI of the day with a groundout.
Will Rudy started on the mound for the Mudcats, going five innings. In his appearance, Rudy gave up three earned runs on two hits and two walks. Rudy also added five strikeouts during his outing.
Chase Costello (W, 7-1) picked up the win in relief pitching the last four innings. Costello went four perfect innings allowing no hits, runs, and striking out five. Rudy and Costello combined for 10 strikeouts while only allowing two hits.
Manuel Urias started on the mound for Fayetteville pitching the first five innings. Urias gave up three runs on three hits but added seven strikeouts in his start. Trey Dombroski (L,4-8) picked up the loss for the Woodpeckers in relief. Dombroski allowed five runs on three hits and struck out five in the outing.
Carolina looks to take their first lead in the series Saturday in Game 5. Logan Henderson is the expected starter for Carolina in Saturday's game with the first pitch scheduled for 5:05 p.m.
